Recalling the memories of her martyr son, Manju Kanwar told The Indian Express, “Sandeep used to tell me many times, ‘I am going in operations mumma and something can happen to me anytime.’ And I always assured him by saying, ‘No worries. Do your work.’ Sandeep often told me that Dal Lake had become dull. Due to terrorism, there was nothing. My son had conducted many successful anti-terrorist operations and seized huge caches of ammunition. I often come to the memorial of my son. January 3 was his 60th birth anniversary.”
Lt Col J S Kanwar (Rtd), father of martyr Major Sandeep Shankla, said, “We were invited here today. This war memorial is open for all people.” The martyrs’ parents were accompanied by the officials of District Sainik Board, Panchkula.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leaders including party president J P Nadda, former state party president O P Dhankar, current state party president Nayab Singh Saini, and CM Manohar Lal Khattar paid their homage at the war memorial.
At the end of his speech, Nadda said, “Sandeep Shankla was the child of the entire nation. The country will not forget his sacrifice. I pray that the almighty gives courage to his family to bear the loss.”
