Gurprem Singh, councillor from Ward 4,was elected the new president of Kharar Municipal Council (MC) on Wednesday. Owing allegiance to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD),the first0time councillors name was proposed by councillor Kuldeep Singh and seconded by another councillor Darshan Singh at a special meeting of the MC held under tight security arrangements today.
Since no other candidate turned up for election,Gurprem was elected unanimously without opposition, Kharar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajeev Kumar Gupta told Newsline. SDM was appointed as convener by Mohali Deputy Commissioner Parveen Kumar to conduct the election.
While all 15 elected councillors attended the meeting,Kharar Congress MLA Balbir Sidhu, who being an ex-officio member has a voting right in the civic body, was absent.
MC has got its second president in less than two years tenure of its present house following the resignation of previous MC president Sukhwant Singh recently.
Though Sukhwant, who was also the first-timer and younger brother of Chamkaur Sahib Independent MLA Charanjit Singh, was also elected unanimously in November 2008 but he had begun facing the dissidence from several councillors right from his taking over the charge.
As dissidence mounted and threatened to remove him by no confidence vote,Sukhwant had stepped down though citing ill health as reason and denying any dissidence.
Soon after Gurprems election,Tourism Minister Hira Singh Gabria, who is SADs party affairs incharge for Mohali district, and Morinda SAD MLA Ujjagar Singh Badali arrived at the MC office, congratulated the new MC president and thanked the councillors for making a unanimous choice, which they claimed as SADs victory.
Development a priority
The new MC president said the all-round development of the town will be his top priority. Improvement will be made in the provision of the basic civic amenities with the redressal of public demands and complaints would be addressed in a time-bound manner, he said.
