An octogenarian head of a gurdwara in Chandigarh periphery was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping a 40-year-old woman from Morinda. The accused Amarjeet Singh, who hails from Delhi, reportedly committed the crime after consuming liquor and kept the victim in captivity the whole night at gurdwara premises,SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said.

In the morning, the woman approached the village panchayat concerned, which guided her to the local police.

She told the police that she had read an advertisement in a vernacular daily for women required to work at a gurdwara in Gurra village, around 7 km from Mullanpur, near Chandigarh.

“Yesterday,I called on the given contact number and the person asked me to meet him at the Chandigarh bus stand and assured lucrative salary,” said the woman,a mother of two minor children.

After meeting her at the bus stand,Amarjeet took her to the gurdwara in his car.

“At night,he asked me to cook food, while he started drinking. Later,in an inebriated condition,he raped me repeatedly throughout the night,” she alleged, adding that Amarjeet threatened her of dire consequences if she told anyone.

Preliminary police investigation revealed that Amarjeet had settled here recently after establishing a gurdwara. He has been booked under sections 376 and 506 of the IPC and will be produced before a local court tomorrow. The vaginal swabs of the woman were taken for medical examination.
