3 men ‘involved in Punjab grenade attacks’ killed in UP encounter

Three members of the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), who were allegedly involved in grenade attacks at police establishments in the border areas of Punjab, were killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district on Monday morning. The encounter was jointly conducted by police teams from Punjab and UP.

The deceased were identified as Gurwinder Singh (25), Varinder Singh alias Ravi (23), and Jashanpreet Singh alias Pratap Singh (18), all residents of Gurdaspur.

In a post on X, Punjab’s Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the module was controlled by KZF chief Ranjeet Singh Nita, and also by one Jagjeet Singh, who the DGP said was serving in the British Army.

“In a major breakthrough against a Pak-sponsored Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) terror module, a joint operation of UP Police and Punjab Police has led to an encounter with three module members who fired at the police party,” the DGP said in a post. He also said the injured were “immediately taken to CHC Puranpur for urgent medical treatment”. According to UP Police officers, the men succumbed to their injuries while under treatment.

In a later post, he said, “This module is controlled by Ranjeet Singh Nita, the chief of KZF, and operated by Jaswinder Singh Mannu, based in Greece, a resident of village Agwan. It is further controlled by Jagjeet Singh, based in the UK and serving in the British Army. Jagjeet Singh used the identity of Fateh Singh Baggi.”

Two police constables, Sumit Rathi and Shahnawaz, were also injured in the exchange of fire.

Officers in UP said the Punjab Police first received information about the suspects’ presence in Pilibhit and coordinated with the UP Police to conduct the operation.

Following this, a team stationed at the Kamariya crossing in Pilibhit’s Puranpur spotted three people on a motorcycle and cordoned off the area.

Surrounded from all sides, the suspects allegedly opened fire. The police returned fire, injuring the three suspects. They were rushed to a local hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.

The motorcycle they were travelling in had been reported stolen on Sunday, police said, adding that a case has been filed into the matter.

In a statement, Uttar Pradesh Police Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash confirmed that the three were involved in an attack on a police outpost in Gurdaspur. According to police, the attack on the police outpost had taken place on December 18.

The police have sent the bodies for postmortem and are in the process of notifying their families. Efforts are underway to gather information about their associates and those who provided them shelter in Pilibhit.
