The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Care Providers (NABH) is a constituent of the Board of Quality Council of India (QCI),set up under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
The accreditation would ensure a strong focus on patient rights and benefits, safety, control and prevention of infections in hospitals and practising good protocols like special care for vulnerable groups, critically ill patients and better and controlled clinical outcome.
Currently, only a private hospital in Mohali is accredited with the NABH.
The proposal, which was sent to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scheme, has been approved and about Rs 19 lakh has been sanctioned.
The proposal has been approved under the NRHM scheme. Once the accreditation is done, there would be constant external monitoring after fulfilling the protocols and guidelines. This would ensure high quality patient care in the hospital and ensure better healthcare delivery system, said G Dewan, deputy medical superintendent and official spokesman of the hospital.
After the accreditation, there will be regular monitoring of the hospital including inspection by specialised teams to renew the accreditation.
The NABH standards are benchmarked with the best international standards. The International Society for Quality in Healthcare has accredited the standards for hospitals, developed by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers. Basically,NABH aims at streamlining the entire operations of a hospital., said Director-Health Services Chander Mohan.
The government hospital had been in the news for wrong reasons pertaining to two cases of medical negligence and with the accreditation, the officials are hoping to raise the bar for the hospital.
In fact, till a few years back, only the private and corporate hospitals were coming forward for accreditation but now more and more public sector hospitals from different states are coming forward to apply for the NABH accreditation. As of now,Gujarat,Kerala,Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, have many of their government run hospitals accredited.
Besides these states,Delhi has about seven private and corporate hospitals that have the NABH accreditation.
