Google doodles Uncle Pai

Few remembered that Saturday marked the 82nd birth anniversary of the man behind India’s largest-selling comic book series,Amar Chitra Katha. But Google chose to honour the late Anant Pai,fondly known as Uncle Pai,with a tribute doodle on its home page.

Depicting a comic strip, the first panel of the doodle showed a young Pai seated at his desk, while the second had him standing next to a book shelf with some of his comic books. Google’s logo ran across the two panels in the background.

Pai passed away earlier this year, following a heart attack, leaving behind his legacy of numerous memorable characters, such as Suppandi,Tantri the Mantri and Shikari Shambu. He launched Amar Chitra Katha in 1967,after he realised that many Indian kids knew very little about Indian mythology, and the series retold folk tales, mythological stories and biographies of famous Indian personalities in the comic book format. Tinkle, with its fictional Indian comic characters, was first published in 1980 and it became hugely popular as well.
