Singer Tulsi Kumar’s song plays for women’s cricket team! Had her father been alive,he would’ve been quite proud of his little girl. Singer Tulsi Kumar, daughter of Late Gulshan Kumar,on a request from the former Indian women cricket captain and Arjuna awardee,Anjum Chopra,Tulsi has allowed her song ‘Kudi Punjaban’ from her debut album ‘Love Ho Jaaye’ to be used for a sports documentary film titled ‘Poor cousins of million dollar babies’. Directed by Sunil Yash Kalra, the documentary will be screened at Toronto Sports Film Festival from October 1 to 3 this year. “The song is in Punjabi and it talks about the celebration of womanhood and fits perfectly in the background of the sequence it’s used in as that’s when the team is celebrating a well deserved victory,” tells Tulsi, who is all for encouraging women’s cricket. “Women have proved themselves in every field. I had no idea about the Indian women’s cricket team till I met Anjum Chopra. This documentary film is an attempt to create awareness about women’s cricket and I’ve made a small contribution by lending my track for this film,” smiles the singer. About the film,it’s all about women power and Anjum will preview it for the President,Pratibha Patil and Delhi Chief Minister,Sheila Dixit too. For the past four years,Anjum and the director/author,Kalra,also an eminent sports historian, have been working tirelessly on the completion of their short news documentary in tracing the origin and the history of women’s cricket. This 25 minute film shows how women cricketers, despite the lack of funds and other facilities, still manage to enjoy the game. It captures the high voltage drama, tension and camaraderie of the players. “I have been following women’s cricket all my life and it was time to tell their story to the rest of the world. The film is a befitting tribute to these women who have faced hardships to nurture the game of women’s cricket and endured skepticism and ridicule to promote it,” pens Kalra, who researched and scripted the film. For Anjum,”The song,’Kudi Punjaban’,is a celebration for us and it depicts everything that we need to showcase, especially women empowerment.” Go Girl!
