Had died on way to hospital on Friday; might have been poisoned, say cops

The police on Saturday identified the girl who was found in a semi-conscious state near the Sukhna Lake and died while being taken to hospital.

Sonia, a 25-year-old resident of Sector 22,is suspected to have been poisoned before being abandoned near the lake. She was employed with the UT Engineering department on contract basis and was scheduled to be married next month.

Sonia’s parents told the police she left home for office on Friday at 9 am and was carrying a mobile phone,a purse and lunchbox. None of these items were recovered from her possession when the police found her.

The police said Sonia’s parents kept searching for her after her work hours on Friday. “Around late night, they came to know about a body recovered by the police from near the lake. They approached the police and went to the mortuary in Sector 32 for identification,” a police officer said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Madhur Verma said they suspect foul play in the case. “Nothing was recovered from Sonia when she was spotted in a semi-conscious condition near the lake. In fact, her slippers were also missing. This indicates that somebody abandoned her at the lake. It is possible that somebody poisoned her. We have asked for call details of her mobile phone for further investigations,” he added.

The police said her family has ruled out the possibility of an affair. She was happy with the scheduled marriage,Sonia’s parents are believed to have told the police.
