Giant-killer Ranjeet annexes title

A day after slaying top seed Fatehdeep Singh in the semis,CHART trainee Ranjeet Singh continued his giant-killing spree and defeated second seed Aditya Deshwal of Delhi in the final to win the boy's Under-18 singles title of the CLTA-AITA Talent Series tennis tournament for boys and girls Under-14 and -18 at the CLTA Complex on Friday.

A day after slaying top seed Fatehdeep Singh in the semis,CHART trainee Ranjeet Singh continued his giant-killing spree and defeated second seed Aditya Deshwal of Delhi in the final to win the boy’s Under-18 singles title of the CLTA-AITA Talent Series tennis tournament for boys and girls Under-14 and -18 at the CLTA Complex on Friday.

Ranjeet, after ousting Fatehdeep from the tournament, looked in good touch in the final match and played some delectable shots in the title victory. For someone who got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play against Leander Paes, the tennis legend,in an exhibition match held at CLTA on April 10,it really was a moment to cherish when he flashed the winner’s trophy on the same court where he had got the chance to rub shoulder with Paes.

Without giving much chance to the number two seed,Ranjeet dominated throughout the first set and hit some powerful forehands to win 6-2. Braving the sultry conditions,Ranjeet continued in the same way and grabbed the second set 6-3 to annex the title.

Meanwhile,Karandeep Singh,Fatehdeep’s younger brother, produced a clinical performance to clinch the boy’s Under-14 singles title. He defeated Sagar Bains 7-5,6-1 in an exciting encounter. Sagar matched Karandeep shot for shot and took 5-3 lead in the first set,but his resistance could not break Karandeep and Bains lost the first set 5-7. On the other hand,Karandeep, who was slowly coming into form, hammered Bains 6-1 in the second set to claim the title.

In the battle between two CLTA trainees,it was Aarushi Kakkar who had the final laugh when she defeated a resilient Saumya Saxena 6-3,1-6,6-3 in a thrilling girl’s Under 14 final. After winning the first set,Aarushi found herself looking down the barrel when she easily lost the second set 1-6. However, she kept her nerves and brushed off Saumya’s challenge in the final set to win 6-3 and annex the title.

In the girl’s Under-18 final,Ashima Garg, the wild card entrant, kept the spectators spell-bound when she thrashed top seed Sehnaj Singh of Delhi 6-0,6-0 without losing a single game.

Aarushi Kakkar paired with Shristi Dhanda and gave another sterling performance and defeated Aarzoo Chaudhary and Taru Ahluwalia 6-2,6-0 in girl’s doubles Under-14 final, while Sagar Bains paired with Calvin Golmei to claim the boy’s Under-14 doubles title after troucing Sabrang Sandal and Raunaq Singh 6-3,6-0.
