The management of the garbage processing plant at Dadumajra has agreed to install one of the equipment suggested by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC). This remedial step comes after a showcause notice was served to the plant management and measures to control the stench were suggested in a report.
The issue of foul smell from the plant saw heated debate in the House Meet of the Municipal Corporation held on Friday. The councillors stated that the stench was a cause of trouble for residents throughout the city and numerous complaints were being received.
The management today informed that they would be installing a scrubber in the plant. Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria, while explaining the problems in functioning of the plant to the House, had stated that there was a need to burn the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) at 1000 degrees for the volatile compounds to burn.
The CPCC had earlier,in an interim report about the functioning of the plant, directed the management to do the same. However,in a reply to the CPCC,the plant management had stated that this would require installation of a new high capacity furnace as well as replacing and redesigning stack and ducts to withstand such high temperature. This would require huge investment as well as sometime,it had stated.
Brig R S Sahota (Retd),vice-president of J P Associates, which manages the plant, said that the stench is due to irregular lifting of garbage by the civic body.
He further blamed the MC for not composting the inerts from the plant. The councillors on Friday had expressed concern over the health of Dadumajra residents while claiming that the garbage was not being processed till the last stage.
