Former murder convict held for molesting girl students in Shimla

An ex-murder convict was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly molesting at least 11 girl students of a government school in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla, the police said.
The suspect, according to the police, runs a shop near the schoolwhere he would allegedly exploit the girls when they came to purchase stationery items and candies.
“The suspect is a murder convict who came out of jail last year after completing his sentence. He had escaped when the victim students through their teacher lodged a police complaint. He was arrested last night. He is being questioned,” said an officer.
Confirming the incident, SP (Shimla) Sanjeev Gandhi said, “One of the victims informed her school teacher, who further informed the principal. The school authorities held a meeting of the Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee (SHPC). Further, more victims came to the fore narrating their ordeal,” Gandhi said.
The victims are being counselled by the women counsellors, he said, adding that a DSP-level officer is in charge of the investigation.
Police said the man was arrested under Section 8 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. He was produced in a local court on Thursday.
