A senior citizen died after a speeding Chevrolet Tavera hit his scooter on the road dividing Sectors 11 and 14 on Sunday afternoon. The deceased,Sushil Sharma (60),a retired manager of the Punjab State Cooperative Bank, died on the spot. The unidentified driver, who escaped with the car,is absconding.
The mishap occurred at 1.30 pm when Sharma was returning to his house in Sector 11. The rashly driven car struck his Honda Activa from behind. Eyewitnesses said the impact of the accident was such that Sharma was flung into the air for a few seconds, after which he fell on the road and was run over by the car. Sharma was wearing a helmet, which was completely crushed in the mishap.
The deceaseds family claims that a BMW car, bearing a VIP registration number, had followed the killer vehicle for quite some distance. Our neighbours saw the BMW car speeding behind the Tavera in an attempt to catch up. The BMWs driver might have noted down the cars registration number, said Sharmas daughter Aditi.
Investigations are on. We have checked all workshops in the city to see whether a white Tavera car pulled in for repairs today, said investigating officer Assistant Sub-Inspector Resham Singh.
Asked about the witness BMW,the ASI said they are yet to trace the car.
Sharma is survived by his wife and two daughters,Aditi and Anchal. While Aditi is pursuing a course in dental surgery,Anchal has just taken her BCom exams. The three were in Ambala to attend the wedding of a close relative, but returned upon hearing news of the accident.
My father,an active supporter of the RSS,stayed behind to complete some campaigning work today. He said he would join us for the wedding on Monday, a grieving Aditi told Newsline.
