Everything started with the creation of memes on teachers on Instagram. However, things became ugly as the school authorities allegedly scolded the children for their actions. Later, it even reportedly led to summons by the Chandigarh Cyber Cell and everything culminated into a heart-wrenching tragedy that unfolded in Zirakpur on Saturday night when a class 11 student (17) allegedly took his life by hanging himself at home.

The victim, Maulik’s mother, Ritu Verma, who is a single parent, revealed that the Chandigarh Cyber Cell had summoned her son for questioning regarding a complaint filed by his school. Despite informing ASI Gurdev Singh that she was out of town (Jalandhar) and would personally accompany her son to the police station later, the victim was still called in, along with three other students, according to the complainant.

According to the victim’s mother, police obtained the child’s contact details from an unknown source and summoned him alone in her absence. At the Cyber Cell office in Sector 17, Chandigarh, the 17-year-old and his friends were allegedly assaulted and threatened. After returning home, he took the drastic step.

When Verma arrived home, she found her son’s room locked from the inside. After repeated knocks went unanswered, she broke a window and saw him hanging from the ceiling fan. Family members rushed him to JP Hospital in Zirakpur, where doctors declared him dead. His body was later shifted to Derabassi Hospital for postmortem.

Holding the school management and a ASI responsible, the victim’s mother demanded justice. She revealed that four months ago, Maulik and four other students were accused by the school of creating memes about teachers on Instagram. The school had called their parents, issued a warning, and the students deleted the account. However, despite this, the school allegedly continued to harass them. On Saturday, the students were reportedly assaulted at the Cyber Crime office.

On Sunday, the complainant’s family, accompanied by other parents, approached Zirakpur police to file a complaint. They also planned to meet SSP Chandigarh and DC Chandigarh, demanding strict action against those responsible for the harassment of minors.

Zirakpur police confirmed the recovery of a suicide note, but stated that it did not mention any names. They said a postmortem would be conducted on Monday before handing over the body to the family. Since the matter falls under Chandigarh’s jurisdiction, further investigation will be conducted there.

Police further stated that only the Chandigarh Education Department and SSP Chandigarh could comment on the case.

SSP Mohali Deepak Pareek has assured a comprehensive investigation into the matter, vowing to leave no stone unturned. Once the inquiry is complete, police will take appropriate action as per the law, Pareek added.
