Fortis Hospital announced here on Tuesday that it had successfully conducted a finger joint replacement on Balbir Singh, who had sustained a gunshot wound on his ring finger and had taken retirement from the Indian Army after 20 years of service. The injured finger had become a serious handicap, including rejection for re-employment into the police services. The surgery was conducted by Dr Manuj Wadhwa,Head and Director,Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Department.

“The agony of not being able to work and earn a livelihood was depressing me along with the pain and rigidity of the finger,” said Balbir Singh.

“I decided to come to Fortis for treatment from my village near Yamunanagar. I am glad that I did and I hope to get a job soon and get settled in life again,” he added.

Dr Wadhwa said,“Finger joint replacements are not as common as knee and hip replacements since they may not pose a serious threat to one¿s lifestyle. But emotionally, for patients of Rheumatoid Arthritis, injury victims as well as congenital defects these can play havoc,”
