The National Institute of Hydrology,Roorkee, which is conducting a study on how to save Sukhna Lake, will submit its final report to the Chandigarh Administration by the end of April.
This was told to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning Sukhna Lake. Advocate Onkar Singh Batalvi, counsel for the central government,on Thursday produced a letter written to him by the institute.
Regarding the completion of the study, the institute has submitted that sincere efforts are being made to complete the study by April 2013.
Although, the final reports preparation and submission may take some time, the study would be completed in April and the final recommendations would be communicated to the Chandigarh Administration before April end as desired by the High Court, reads the letter written by Dr S D Khobragade of the institute.
Also, the stalemate between the Chandigarh Administration and the institute over the release of money, for conducting the study has been settled.
The institute has also clarified that money has not been a hindrance to the progress of the study.
The letter further reads,The money will be released as per the terms and conditions of the project.
The institute had submitted an interim report last year to the Administration. In the interim report, the institute had found that water availability, weed infestation, siltation, and deficit rainfall led to the scarcity of water in the lake.
It was suggested that the Administration should get a feasibility study carried out to identify alternative source of water for the lake.
The study had also identified reasons that led to the growth of weed in the lake. This included sediments inflow from the catchment area, contribution from the Kaimbwala nullah and Kansal nullah, overland flow from Kaimbwala region, litter from forest area and nutrient regenerated from the lake.
