After the failure of EDUSAT (Education Satellite) earlier this year, server overload has given a major setback to the e-education programme in government schools of the state. Students of Class XI and XII have not been able to attend their e-classes for the last over 20 days, and so have the students of Class VIII,IX and X who were enrolled for mathematics, science and English studies through satellite education only this year. No e-class has been held since July 15.
EDUSAT classes were an innovative idea and have been a great help to the students of government schools who can have lectures from experts to enhance their knowledge without spending on tuition classes. There are nearly 1,100 EDUSAT centres in the state in different government schools, industrial training institutes and polytechnic institutes.
Due to a technical fault in the satellite transmission, the classes for various competitive examinations, such as Pre-Medical Entrance Test and engineering entrances also could not be held earlier this year.
Sources in the education department said EDUSAT was supposed to work till 2011 but it stopped working in 2010 only and then InSAT 4C was used to continue with the programme, but the server in Mohali has now a developed a snag. Various scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are repairing the fault, said an official.
The EDUSAT project was conceived by the Punjab government and a vast network was set up in the state by installing satellite interactive terminals in different educational institutions. The hub studio in Mohali is connected to these centres through the education satellite. The system enables students at these centres to see and listen to an expert delivering a lecture anywhere in the country. The teacher can also interact with the students across the state in real time. While a lecture is being delivered, the queries of students are received and flashed on the computer in front of the teacher.
Mandeep Sharma,in-charge of EDUSAT for Doaba and Majha regions, said the server was down due to overloading and scientists from ISRO are now putting in place a proper back-up system by setting up a dual server so that transmission was not hampered.
He said the satellite education would be resumed soon.
