Father-son duo booked for dowry harassment

The husband and father-in-law of a 22-year-old woman were booked by the Panchkula police on Sunday for allegedly torturing her for dowry.

Anu Bala has accused her husband,Gaurav Mangla,and his father,Manjit Mangla,of beating and threatening to kill her. She further alleged that her in laws illegally detained her on Friday evening. It was only on the following day that I managed to escape and reach my relatives who admitted me in the General Hospital,Sector 6,Bala told the police.

I married Gaurav in August,2008 and ever since I have been harassed by my in-laws for dowry. They beat me up but also tried to poison me to death. While I had lodged a police complaint then,the matter was settled after we struck a compromise. The dowry harassment,however,continued thereafter, said Bala to the police,while adding that she was even forced to write a note under duress denying the involvement of anyone in her death.

The police have booked Gaurav and Manjit on charges of illegal confinement,dowry and causing injury under Sections 498 A,323,506 and 342 of the IPC. Gauravs sister,Lilly,has also been booked in the case.

The father of the complainant,Satpal Mittal,claimed that this was not the first instance when his daughter had been tortured by her in laws.

Gaurav works as an engineer with a private telecom company at Chandigarh while his father is an employee of Tubewell Corporation,Punjab,at Chandigarh.
