Five people were killed and 30 others injured when a bus collided with a truck and fell into a drain in Punjab’s Faridkot Tuesday morning.
There were 35 passengers in the bus owned by Gidderbaha MLA Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon’s New Deep Transports company. They were travelling from Muktsar to Amritsar when the accident occurred on a bridge near the Shahi Haveli area.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police Pragya Jain said, “Following the head-on collision with the truck, the bus broke through the railing of the bridge and fell into the drain. Both vehicles appeared to be speeding which could have led to the accident. Investigation will follow.”
“Two patients have been referred to Government Medical College and Hospital, Amritsar as their arms had to be amputated while others have been admitted in Faridkot,” she added.
After the accident, local residents jumped into the drain and pulled out some of the injured, while police personnel joined the rescue efforts soon after, sources said. Faridkot Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar said the injured are being provided free treatment.
On December 27 last year, a private bus fell into Lasara drain in Bathinda, killing nine people and injuring nearly 20 others. In September 2023, eight people died and over 30 were injured when another bus run by New Deep Transports fell into a canal in Muktsar.
