It’s one big step towards making a dream come true for this 20-year-old studying at Punjab Engineering College (PEC). City’s Amanpreet Singh has won himself the title of ‘Mr Photogenic’ at the Mr Singh International 2009 contest that was recently held in Amritsar. A global contest that sees young Sikh boys from across the world compete for the title, winners this year were chosen after three months of auditions, zonal rounds, and a rigorous training programme. “I would have liked to bag the top spot but I am extremely delighted and encouraged with this win too,” remarked a visibly pleased Amanpreet who has been harbouring a dream to model since childhood. “Unfortunately there aren’t very many avenues for Sikh models but this contest has been a trend setter by giving young men like me an opportunity,” says this Sector 15 resident who scored with the judges on his looks in the Mr Photogenic round. Into its third year, the Mr Singh International contest has been a popular platform for not just encouraging Sikh men to showcase their handsome side but pride over their cultural identity too. In fact, the rules of the contest demanded that the contestants be ‘Saabat Soorat Sikhs’ meaning those who do not trim their hair were eligible. “Our training sessions were spread out including both physical, emotional as well religious facets. For me it was an experience of a lifetime,” shares Singh who is a third year student of computer engineering at PEC. “My family and friends have been so encouraging. They see me new light,” quips the young lad who loves to shake a leg whenever he gets a chance. “I love to dance and it’s one of my talents as well,” informs Amanpreet who juggles between academics, dance and at least three hours at the gym. “My instructor,Gulab Singh, has also played an important role. He’s been encouraging me to not just be fit but aspire for more,” signs off Amanpreet who is hoping for more modelling stints in the future..
