Police have found the numbers of more than 100 school students in the mobile phones of the three youth accused of running an extortion racket in the city. “We have to ascertain how many of these students were being actually blackmailed,” said DSP (Operations) Satbir Singh on Wednesday.

Police are contacting these numbers to determine the extent of the racket. The accused, Amitoj Singh, Rajbir Singh and Rattan Lubana, are also being questioned.

Police have, so far, recorded the statements of about 10 students. The accused, all unemployed, were arrested on Sunday night and their police remand ends on Thursday. They were allegedly extorting money from students of St John’s School, Strawberry Fields, Vivek High School and Delhi Public School, counted among the best schools in the city.

Police said they would befriend the students, take them out to movies, parties, hookah bars and other places, shoot their photos and use these to blackmail and extort money. The racket was exposed when a teacher in one of the schools informed the principal who, in turn, referred the matter to the police.

Of the three accused, Rattan Lubana, police said, was involved in a firing incident at Buzz Lounge in Sector 17 last year. His father is a member of the BJP and also the president of the market committee in Sector 26. He has told the police that he is an aspiring politician.

Amitoj is a graduate. His mother is a government school teacher, while his father, who was a sub-inspector of the Punjab Police, died some years back. He was reportedly preparing to join the police.

Rajbir, a resident of Dera Bassi, is a college dropout and son of a constable of the Chandigarh Police.
