A news report on the Mumbai terror attacks,titled Mumbais terror makes Mohali bleed,published in Chandigarh Newsline on November 28 last year,has found place on the merit list for the Karpoor Chandra Kulish International Award 2008. The report by Express reporter Nitin Jain narrated the plight of Mohali resident Karambir Singh Kang,General Manager of Hotel Taj,Mumbai,who lost his wife Niti and two children in the siege.
The award theme for this year was Terrorism and Society. Harinder Baweja and her team from the Hindustan Times won top honours for their news series Welcome to the headquarters of Lashkar-e-Tayyeba,published in December 2008. The winner gets a prize of $11,000 and a trophy.
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will confer the awards on Friday at Hotel Taj Palace,New Delhi. Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot will preside over the function.
A total of 173 entries were received 155 from 48 Indian newspapers and 18 from foreign media establishments in US,France,Serbia,Mauritius,Egypt,Sri Lanka,Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The jury panel included N Ram,Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu,N Ravichandran,Director of IIM Ahmedabad,social activist Aruna Roy and Gulab Kothari,Chief Editor of Patrika Group.
