In a warning to the Punjab government, Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has said that if the decision to expand Mohali’s boundaries, passed by the Municipal Corporation (MC), is not implemented within a month, he will take the matter back to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

He said that the resolution by the Mohali MC on the expansion of boundaries was passed a long time ago, which included extending the municipal limits to include Balongi, Bada Majra, newly developed residential colonies, and new sectors developed by the GMADA (such as TDI, Sector 82, 91). Despite a notification being issued for public objections, the final notification has not been issued.

He mentioned that after the final notification was not issued, Mohali residents and RTI activist Ram Kumar filed a case in the high court, upon which the government filed an affidavit agreeing to the expansion of the municipal boundaries.

Bedi pointed out that six months have passed since the government requested time, but no action has been taken so far, leading to growing frustration and anger among the people. “Since the boundaries are set to be sealed due to the population count, it is crucial that this resolution be implemented before that,” he added.

The Deputy Mayor further stated that he sent a written notice to the government on Tuesday and warned that if no action is taken within a month, he will take the matter back to the high court, and if necessary, file a petition for contempt of court.

Bedi claimed that the municipal elections in Mohali cannot take place until the boundary expansion is carried out because after the boundaries are expanded, the wards will need to be redefined.
