Excise dept notice has industry body on boil

A recent edict by the Excise and Taxation department has the traders and industrialists up in arms in Punjab.

A recent edict by the Excise and Taxation department has the traders and industrialists up in arms in Punjab.

As per a public notice, the industrialists importing goods worth more than Rs 2 lakh via rail or air will have to give prior information to the Excise and Taxation department. Also they will have to submit the invoice number.

The notice states that the industrialists and traders need to get the login name and password from the department before may 1,so that they can give the information online.

The Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal has protested the notice with traders saying that they will approach deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal.

Amrit Lal Jain, president of the Mandal said,“This order will only create obstacles in way of our business. Most of the times even we are not aware as to which company is sending us materials and how many items would they be sending. It would be difficult to inform the department.”

However Excise and taxation commissioner (ETC),A Venuprasadam said,“Anyone doing genuine business should not be worried about the notice. If we get the information via mail about the goods coming via rail or air,it becomes easy to maintain our records.”

In case the industrialists fail to provide the information, they will be charged penalty, which will be 50 per cent of the total amount of the goods. “A Beopar Mandal team met me and I had clarified their doubts,” Venuprasadam added.
