Members of the Federation of Sectors Welfare Association Chandigarh (FOSWAC),in an interaction with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other top officials of the UT Police department, discussed the general law and order situation in the city. Besides, certain problems related to police functioning were also discussed.
One of the major issues raised by the members of FOSWAC was the absence of beat staff officials. It has been a year since a booth for the beat staff was installed in the sector but we have never seen any official in the post, said Satyanarayan Sharma,General Secretary,Sector 7 Resident Welfare Association (RWA).
He also added that if there is any accident in the sector, there is always a tussle between the Police Station Sector 26 and Police Station Sector 3 officials. Instead of taking an action, the staff of one police station says that the jurisdiction is of the other and vice versa.
P C Sanghi,Chairman,FOSWAC pointed out,Despite the compact area of the city, incidents of thefts, snatching, burglaries, robberies, kidnapping, outraging the modesty of a woman, rapes, suicides, murders, assaults, road rages, road accidents, drug peddling and sale of drugs, immoral activities like nuisance created by paying guests, menace of noise and sound, unauthorized parking, unauthorized vendors and traffic congestion etc – are all on the rise in the city.
He further pointed out that the community policing adopted by the police in the past is not able to fetch desired results.
The fear of the police in the city is fading away and in order to restore the confidence of the citizens, there is an urgent need for the police to take strict action against all kinds of miscreants, Sanghi pointed out
Simultaneously, the adoption of community participation measures wherein the residents share the responsibility with the police for implementing Crimes Prevention Strategies is required, Sanghi further added.
IGP R P Upadhyaya talked about bringing improvement in the system. He said,If a person is not satisfied with the working of the police,he is free to visit me in my office or to send me an e-mail. The IGP also added that urgent steps are being taken to check drug trafficking.
A question was raised by a resident of Sector 38. He said that there are times when the traffic police constables are challaning one person and there are many offenders who manage to escape. What should be done.
SSP (Traffic) Maneesh Chaudhary, said,You can click a picture and upload it on Facebook irrespective of their status and the offender shall be challaned.
Queries raised
Sector 21: A resident asked the police,I had given a complaint about some boys to the police station regarding an accident. The police verified the case and the boys were let off. However, later that evening, those boys came and broke the window panes of my car parked outside my residence. What should we do about this? The resident further suggested the installation of CCTV cameras by the UT police in various spots of the city.
Sector 40: A resident said,There are nearly 50 roundabouts in the city which do not have traffic light signals. It becomes difficult to pass a roundabout without lights.
Sector 33: An RWA member said,There is a need of a slip road at the dividing road of Sector 33 and Sector 34.
A sector 26 RWA member said,There is a lot of drug menace and gambling in our sector. Even if we try of nab the accused, they manage to escape. This can only be curbed if there is a police official present at the beat box.
