Engineering student dies as bike skids

A 19-year-old engineering student died after his motorcycle skidded on the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway near Dera Bassi on Monday morning.

A 19-year-old engineering student died after his motorcycle skidded on the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway near Dera Bassi on Monday morning. The deceased was identified as Mohit Kumar,a resident of Sector 45,Chandigarh,and a second-year student of BE (Computers) at Longowal Polytechnic and Pharmacy College in Dera Bassi.

The incident took place around 8.30 am when Mohit was on his way to college. After turning left from the Chandigarh-Ambala highway,Mohit tried to overtake a truck moving ahead. But another motorcycle was coming from the opposite direction and Mohit had to press hard on the front brake of the motorcycle. Consequently,the bike skidded and Mohit’s head hit the front shocker of the other motorcycle.

He was rushed to the Civil Hospital,where the doctors declared him “dead on arrival”. The body was handed over to the family after conducting a postmortem. The police have booked the other motorcyclist,Sanjeev Kumar of Dera Bassi,for rash and negligent driving. Mohit’s friend Mayank told Newsline that Mohit was very good in studies and quite active in extracurricular activities. Mohit’s mother Veena Rani is a teacher at the Banur Government School and his father Dalip Kumar is a public servant in Chandigarh. Mohit has a younger brother and a younger sister.
