Engineering student convicted for rape

The court of additional district and sessions judge,Ravi Kumar Sondhi,on Friday convicted a 21-year-old student of Chandigarh Engineering College,Landran,for raping a woman last year.

The court of additional district and sessions judge,Ravi Kumar Sondhi,on Friday convicted a 21-year-old student of Chandigarh Engineering College,Landran,for raping a woman last year. The quantum of sentence will be announced on July 11.

A year into her relationship with Abhishek Verma,the victim realised she was two months pregnant,following which she proposed marriage to him.

After Abhishek denied being the father of the child and refused to marry her,she lodged a police complaint. The DNA reports in court,later,proved the accused was the biological father of the child.

The case had witnessed a twist in March,earlier this year,when the victim urged the court to persuade the accused to marry her for a day so as to legitimise her then seven-month-old daughter.

In response,Abhishek pleaded that he could adopt the child,but would not marry the woman. Even as she assured the court that she would divorce the accused the very next day,her plea was rejected.

Abhishek has been convicted under Section 376 of the IPC.
