The Swami Vivekanand Group of Institutions organised a certificate distribution programme Protsahan 09 on Friday for students enrolled under its rural development course Navi Rah.
A rural computer centre and stitching centre are being run under the programme which imparts training to students of nearby villages at minimum cost.
Patiala Deputy Commissioner Dipinder Singh was the chief guest at the function and he distributed certificates and trophies to 70 students.
Cultural events such as plays,dances and a poem recitation competition set the mood of the event and gave a chance to students to showcase their talents.
In his address,Dipinder Singh appreciated the efforts of the Swami Vivekanand Group for taking the initiative and encouraging students from rural background. If every college starts taking such revolutionary steps,India would be a better and developed country and we all can hope for a better future, he said.
Swami Vivekanand Group Chairman Ashwani K Garg,said the region is emerging as an IT hub and the college was keen to extend the new trend to rural areas.
He further announced that toppers of various courses will be offered financial aid for higher studies.
Ashok Garg,Director (Finance),stated that villages are the real heart of our nation as most of our population resides in rural areas. For the development of the nation,we have to uplift rural India, he said.
Dr Sanjay Bajaj,principal of Swami Vivekanand College of Pharmacy,said creation of self-employment for rural citizens was the need of the hour. We want to get villagers into the mainstream by empowering them with new technology so that they can move along with the developed sections of society, Dr Bajaj said.
After the certificate distribution ceremony,a tree plantation drive was also held in the campus. Dipinder Singh along with other dignitaries Karamjit Singh,divisional forest officer,Patiala,and Harbhajan Singh,range officer,Rajpura,planted saplings.
