Drug smugglers active on the India-Pakistan border along Punjab have been known to resort to innovative methods to transport contraband. While the use of drones for delivery of heroin and other narcotics from Pakistan to India is well known, the Border Security Force (BSF) has now stumbled upon a novel method – use of slippers.
According to BSF officials, the incident took place on May 3 at the Indo-Pak border near Bhindi Nain village in Amritsar. Troops of B Company, 183 Battalion were stationed near the border fence on land which is easily accessible from Pakistan.
At around 5.20 pm, alert troops observed a pair of plastic slippers lying unattended in a harvested field. On careful inspection, it was found that the soles of the slippers concealed two packets of a substance suspected to be heroin (gross weight 435 grams), wrapped in yellow adhesive tape.
Smugglers on either side of the international border may have thought that this unassuming piece of footwear would escape detection by the BSF personnel. Despite the small quantity of the consignment, the recovery sheds light on different tactics used by smugglers, officials said.
