Yearender parties will see the Little Black Dress emerge in an all-new avatar

It’s the fag end of the year and also the most exciting. With invites for yearender parties already doing the rounds, everyone’s busy putting together a look that’s not just follows the season’s style statement but also one that would be truly memorable. When it comes to the city’s line-up of fashionistas and their choice for the finale show of the year, dresses have been a unanimous choice. “It’s a trend that’s caught on really well. It’s been THE dress code for all Christmas and New Year parties including the SJOBA ball,” points out designer Mini Sondhi of the label ‘Bling Bling’. In fact this designer label’s Autumn-Winter collection that is on the shelves right now is all about smart gowns and dresses. Yes,we know the little black dress has been a fashion must-have for years now,but it’s more than just an all-black affair now. “Colours are really strong this season…expect a lot of turquoise, fuchsia, emerald green and more,” lists out Sondhi who has even designed warm tunics and knee-length dresses that are best teamed with tights and stockings. “The silhouette is predominantly A-line and that’s a look that suits all body types,” she explains as we eye NIIFT student Elena step out in a bottle green ensemble that’s fit for the red carpet! “As far as embellishments go,brooches and detailing on belts, cowl necks, bows are in,” explains Mini who recommends flowing silhouettes for those on the heavier side. “Unlike what’s perceived, dresses aren’t just for those with a figure to flaunt,” she quips.

Also unlike a few years ago when dressing up for a social do meant choosing a pretty ethnic suit or if one really wanted to go the Indo-Western way, then a tunic or kurti over trousers sufficed, that’s no longer the case. “Dresses are the done thing,” agrees Sector 8 based stylist Shelly who runs Shelly’s Wardrobe and has been stocking up on dresses for over a year now. “The ones that do well aren’t too short and reach the knees making them look elegant,” adds Shelly mentioning a line-up that makes the most of warmer tones.

What’s more, the dress has shed its short, black cutesy image to emerge as chic and smart. “If you notice dresses or frocks aren’t being sported by just teenagers or college-going crowd. Those in their 30s and 40s now have no qualms in slipping on one either,” remarks Naini Gupta of the designer store Soh Koh where you can lay your hands on A-line silhouettes best teamed with high heels. Among those who have always had a soft corner for dresses is city-based dietician Gurleen Singh who we caught flaunting a fine collection at dos across town. Her dress wardrobe includes eye-catching colours like deep red, turquoise and even pretty peach. “I love dresses. Not only are they feminine but look smart too. Dresses are definitely this year’s biggest trend,” she says out loud. We couldn’t agree more.
