With the onset of winter, the deciduous trees start shedding leaves. During this time there is no growth and the bare skeleton of the plant is visible. It may not go well with the surroundings, especially when another tree stands in the garden at home. The best option is to decorate the base with pebble chips. The arrangement can continue till the plant again starts growing. Six-coloured chips in red, yellow, grey, green, white and black are now available in the market. A little imagination can ensure that your garden looks presentable.
I have planted chrysanthemums in some of the beds in my garden. Now,I have been told that I will not be able to plant winter annuals. What are my options?
Jasbir Kaur,Chandigarh
Jasbir, you have been given the right information. The chrysanthemums will flower in December and it will be too late to vacate the bed and plant winter annuals. The remedy, for the next time,is that you should grow chrysanthemums in pots. This will allow you to plant winter annuals on time.
I find small black insects on my chrysanthemum plants. There are also black spots on the leaves. What is the reason and what should I do to stop it?
Manpreet,Chandigarh
The small black insects on chrysanthemum are black aphids and the spots are fungal leaf spots. Spray bavistin and rogor, dissolved at half a gram and one milliliter, respectively,to a liter of water. Repeat after a fortnight.
What is the procedure to make liquid manure? How is it applied to the plants?
Satnam Singh, Panchkula
Liquid manure is made by dissolving fresh cow dung with water in 1:8 ratio. The mixture is left undisturbed for about two to three weeks. It is then decanted through muslin cloth. Mix water into the liquid to make it weak tea colour. Add one liter per application each week to the pots. Do not let it come in contact with leaves,as it could burn them.
What is the instant disinfectant for application to cut-ends.
Can I apply it to pruned roses too?
Mamta,Chandigarh
The instant disinfectant is blitox, which comes in powder form. You can mix a little water into it to make slurry, which can be applied to the cut-ends,including the rose.
