The Mango Mela at Pinjore has recently concluded. It was truly a feast for the eyes. There were the best of individual cultivars like Dusehri,Langra,Chausa and Amarpali since it was a competition. On display,however,was a collection of various varieties grown by individuals. It is good from the germ-plasm point of view of which the departments should also take note,for selections and breeding. But don’t be tempted to try and grow one of these varieties in your home garden as they are not native to this region. Grow only the recommended cultivars that have been mentioned above.

My motia plant flowered profusely and gave many fragrant flowers in the beginning,but now there is no more flowering. Will the plant produce more flowers or is the season over?

The season is not over yet as the plant will have renewed growth. The plant will give a fresh crop of fragrant flowers on fresh growth. So,wait and watch.

A part of my portulaca bed is vacant as there is no plant. The gap is prominently visible. How can it be filled?

Break the plant in the middle and plant it in the place of the gap. The plant will take root in no time and start bearing flowers thereby filling the gap.

Can I plant turnip and carrot at this time of the year? What is the best time to plant peas?

Wait till August-September for sowing turnip and carrot. For peas,the best time is in the month of October.

I have a fully grown ber tree in my home garden. When should I add fertilizer and how much?

Add urea at the rate of 200 gm per year (the age of the tree). A five-year-old tree is considered fully grown and to this one can add one kg of urea. Put half of the urea now and the other half in October-November.
