Different Notes for Different Folks

It might not seem like the next Woodstock music festival, but it definitely has the gusto to be one.

It might not seem like the next Woodstock music festival, but it definitely has the gusto to be one. The line-up at the 100 Pipers India Music Week, that will have 40 bands from various countries, promises some excitement in the live music circuit this year. Occupying the stage will be bands from diverse genres, from the alternate rock veterans Menwhopause to the rock ‘n’ roll band Parikrama, ska band The Ska Vengers, the rustic The Raghu Dixit Project and the popular blues band Soulmate. To travel across three cities — Delhi,Mumbai

and Bengaluru — in a span of three days, from November 16 to 19,each band will be at a different venue every night. In Delhi, they will perform around town,at ten places, including Zook,Lodhi Garden,Circa 1193 and Florian.

“There has been a massive change in the underground music scene in the last four-five years. It is all set to become a part of the mainstream consciousness in a big way. We are taking it one notch higher by making these bands interact with each other,” says Amit Saigal, director of the festival, pointing out that the line-up also includes several international acts. If chanteuse Stephanie Thazar will travel from French

Reunion Island, electronica trio Jahcoozi will come from Germany. Electro-soul producer Mathias Stubo and eclectic pop duo Mari & Stein will represent Norway.

And there is more to the music festival than just music. The schedule also features panel discussions and conferences with key members of various Indian and international bands discussing issues like copyright and songwriting. “The festival is a great platform for a host of indie bands purely because of the diversity in the genres and the sheer number of artistes. I am tired of attending and playing at festivals where only one style of music is played for five hours,” says Nitin Malik, lead vocalist of Parikrama. Finally, rock in

India is rearing its head again, with musicians belting it out on their own.
