Designer Family

Riimple and Mayur are one of the few mother-son designer teams in the industry

When you grow up watching your mother put together a stunning wardrobe every other day, your ambition invariably involves swathes of colourful fabric and intricate embroidery. And so it was with Mayur, son of designer Riimple, who is based out of Dubai and Gurgaon. He joined his mother two years ago and they claim to be “the only mother-son designer team to have a joint label”.

Having dressed up Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut, the designers were in town to showcase their latest bridal collection at the ongoing Wedding Asia exhibition at Taj Chandigarh. They specialise in Indian bridalwear as well as occasion wear. “My mom’s an embroidery specialist while I like to style with a hint of bling,” says Mayur,an alumnus of Thames Valley University,London.

Their latest collection takes inspiration from the opulent Mughal era. “I travelled the length and breadth of Jaisalmer to research for this collection. The lehengas boast of embroideries that are reminiscent of the royal palaces,” explains the designer,as he shows off a silver-coloured lehenga inspired by the Sheesh Mahal.

Apart from traditional Indian wear, the designer label offers fusion apparel. “We have coats that come over jumpsuits but are embellished with Indian embellishments,” pitches in Riimple, who credits her son with bringing a contemporary touch to her work. They will be showcasing their collection at the forthcoming Jaipur International Fashion Week slated for September 15. “We are also set to open our first flagship store in New Delhi later this month,” informs Mayur
