Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a double rape and murder convict, was Friday granted a 50-day parole — his first temporary release from jail this year, and ninth in last three years — with Haryana government justifying the move saying it follows standard jail manual procedures.
The fresh parole comes just 29 days after the chief of the Sirsa-headquartered sect walked back into Rohtak’s Sunaria jail after spending 21 days out on a furlough. The 21-day furlough, starting Nov 21, was his third temporary release from jail in 2023.
During his temporary release period, the 56-year-old will go to the Dera’s ashram at Barnawa in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat.
Talking to reporters in Sirsa, Haryana Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala said prisoners are entitled to 70 days’ parole and 30 days furlough in a year. “Furlough is given only once, but the parole can be taken twice. It is the choice of the prisoner. There are nearly 24,000 inmates in the Haryana jails and the same rules apply to all,” the minister said.
Ram Rahim is serving a 20-year jail term for raping two of his disciples and a life term for murdering a journalist.
