Cutting or shredding ribbon?

While inaugurating something prestigious,it is an honour for the eminent guest to cut a ribbon. But in case of the inauguration of the Integrated Check Post at Attari,it appears that choosing the “eminent guest” out of political stalwarts was quite difficult. Thus,all prominent ministers from India and Pakistan,who were present on the occasion,were handed over a pair of scissors and allowed to cut the ribbon. Be it the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram,Commerce Minister Anand Sharma,Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal or ministers from Pakistan — Makdoom Amin Fahim and Chief Minister of Pakistan Punjab Mohd Shahbaz Sharif — all were given the opportunity to inaugurate the check post. The only one left was Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. One wonders that if a 5-feet ribbon is cut from five places,will it still be called cutting or shredding a ribbon?
