Court denies rape victim’s request for one-day marriage

A lower court has denied the request of the 24-year-old rape victim who had asked for marriage with the accused,even for a day,in order to ‘legitimise’ their child.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge R K Sondhi rejected the request made last week wherein the victim had urged 21-year-old Abhishek Verma to marry her. It was in March 2008 that Abhishek Verma of Chandigarh Engineering College,Landran,was arrested on charges of raping the woman. After allegedly impregnating her,Verma denied his role stating he was not the father of the child. A case of rape was registered in the Sector-39 police station and the accused was arrested.
