Back from a study tour of Gujarat, city councillors are brimming with ideas to improve the functioning of the Municipal Corporation.
Eighteen councillors who recently went to Surat,Ahmedabad and Baroda to study the functioning of their Municipal Corporations, say they got to learn a lot.
Councillor Anu Chatrath said in Surat, the process of garbage-collection,disposal and bio-medical waste disposal was in tune with the latest technology. Unlike in Chandigarh,Chatrath added, the corporations of Gujarat cities have more powers. Another councillor Jatinder Bhatia said they would forward the proposal of starting a Fire Academy in the city on the lines of Gujarat. The academy will be helpful in training students in firefighting and disaster management. This would increase job opportunities for them, Bhatia said.
Besides,in case there is a major fire, they would be able to contribute to firefighting operations.
Some councillors were impressed by the roads in the state, which have been built considering the future load.
Councillor Anju Beniwala was impressed with the transparency in the system. The functioning of the corporations was very transparent. Those corporations have more power over schools and healthcare, and they have successfully implemented the concept of mobile governance.
Soon, these councillors will present a report of the tour before the MC House.
