‘Cop’ allegedly kills woman friend by pushing her into canal, held
The preliminary investigation indicated that the accused is married and was in a relationship with the victim. The accused wanted to get rid of the victim as his wife was returning to India from abroad.

The Ropar police Thursday arrested a man who allegedly killed a woman by pushing her into Bhakhra canal, with the victim’s family claiming that the accused was posted in the Counter Intelligence (CI) Wing of Punjab Police, a charge that a senior officer said remains to be verified.
The accused, identified as Yuvraj Singh was produced in the district court, which remanded him in five-day police custody.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the accused is married and was in a relationship with the victim. The accused wanted to get rid of the victim as his wife was returning to India from abroad.
According to the police, the victim’s family, which hails from Bilaspur district in Himachal Pradesh, alleged that accused Yuvraj Singh is a police personnel and was posted in the Counter Intelligence (CI) Wing of Punjab Police in Mohali.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ropar (Rural) Rajpal Singh Gill said that the victim went missing on the night of January 20 following which her elder sister lodged a complaint. The complainant stated that her sister had gone to meet Yuvraj, but her cell phone was found to be switched off when she tried to reach out to her.
Stating further, the DSP said that the victim’s sister told the police that her sibling was in touch with Yuvraj for quite some time and the accused was threatening her that he would make her videos viral.
According to Gill, the accused met the victim on the night of January 20 and took her to a bridge on Bhakhra canal in Pathreri Jattan village where he pushed her into the canal.
When asked whether the accused is a police personnel, the DSP said that the police were verifying his antecedents.
On January 22, the victim’s body was fished out by the divers near Passiana bridge in Patiala district and the family identified her following which the police registered a murder case against Yuvraj at Singh Bhagwantpura police station in Ropar district.
The victim had done her BSc (Medical) from Chandigarh and was currently taking coaching from an institute in Chandigarh to become an air hostess. She was staying in a rented accommodation in Sector 123, Mohali.
A senior police officer told The Indian Express that the accused was in a relationship with the victim, but he was already married and hid the fact from her. The accused’s wife, who was in Australia, was now returning to India. The victim was asking Yuvraj to marry her but he refused and in a bid to get rid of her, he killed her, the officer added.
Ropar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gulneet Singh Khurana told The Indian Express that they were investigating the case from all angles and also verifying the rank of the accused.
