The daily commuter at the bus stands in the city is being made to pay extra amounts for every item of eatable purchased. In a clear violation of the Consumer Protection Act,shopkeepers at the bus stand are overcharging harried consumers for cold drinks and other eatables.
A trip to ISBT in Sector 17 and Sector 43 by our correspondent exposed the exorbitant prices charged for cold drinks sold at Rs 12 per bottle instead of Rs 10.
The coke plastic bottle, priced at Rs 20,is sold at Rs 22 and the price of chips packets, too, are sold at prices above the MRP. Two shops at ISBT 43 (shop number 9 and 23) indulge in selling items priced higher than the MRP. Similarly, two shops at the Sector 17 bus stand are also violating the norms.
This practice of overcharging consumers exists with the knowledge of the Administration, which seems helpless in tackling the matter.
Despite being fined by the Administration recently, the shopkeepers resorted to their old ways, said the station superintendent Harbans Singh.
When confronted over the issue, the shopkeepers said they are unable to bear the high rent charged for the shops and this was the only way to reap profits.
The grieving commuters, meanwhile, stated this is as sheer injustice and the practice has remained unchecked.
I commute daily to Sector 34 via the bus stand and it hurts on the pocket to be paying more than the MRP. We,however, seem top have no other option, said Sunita,a commuter.
Director Transport M L Sharma said,We have been taking action against the offenders from time to time and will look into the matter.
