The Congress has demanded a free and fair investigation to fix accountability and recover public money, which it says has pushed the corporation into heavy debt.
The Chandigarh Congress has accused the Municipal Corporation and the administration of obstructing a vigilance probe into alleged corruption in the 24×7 water supply project for Manimajra.
Rajiv Sharma, chief spokesperson of the Chandigarh Congress, alleged that the MC has failed to provide project details and documents sought by vigilance authorities despite notices issued in July and a subsequent reminder.
He said the project was conceived and executed when the BJP held power both at the Centre and in Chandigarh. “A controversial and unnecessary loan of more than ₹450 crore was taken by the BJP-led Municipal Corporation, which is being serviced by increasing taxes on the people,” Sharma said, adding that the MC is now also committed to paying ₹90 crore for operation and maintenance over 15 years, even though the project has yet to take off.
Sharma alleged that large sums of money were misappropriated during the project’s implementation. He recalled that the Congress had boycotted its inauguration by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in August 2024 for this reason.
The spokesperson also dismissed as eyewash a complaint filed by local BJP president Jatinderpal Malhotra, seeking a probe into the project, alleging it was an attempt to “hide the sins of his own party”.
