The Congress party has threatened a mass public agitation against the demarcation of land earmarked for Mohali’s proposed common municipal solid waste management facility (garbage dumping ground) at Swara-Rasanheri-Jhanjeri villages on Mohali’s outskirts even as the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is awaiting a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).

Local Congress MLA Balbir Sidhu has threatened to stage massive protest dharnas and hunger strikes if the district administration went ahead with the demarcation of 58.79 acre under acquisition for the dumping ground.

“When the residents and panchayats of 28 villages in the vicinity of project site had lodged their strong protest and PPCB had not yet given permission, how come you take over the forcible possession of land against the wishes of the landowners,” Sidhu asked the district officials.

Since the villagers were adamant on not allowing the dumping ground at the proposed site, the local leaders of the SAD,BJP,Congress and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the villagers had lodged strong protest against the facility during the public hearing conducted by the PPCB in January, following which GMADA was asked to once again conduct an Air Ambient Quality Test of the site.

GMADA was acquiring land on Mohali’s outskirts to dump estimated 200 tonnes of untreated garbage and solid waste daily generated from 2.5 lakh population of Mohali for next 20 years.

Presently,Mohali’s garbage was being dumped in densely inhabited Industrial Focal Point,Phase VIII-B,here,which Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had ordered to shift till June 2009 but GMADA had failed to do so far.
