Reiterating its ultimatum to phase out diesel and petrol-run autorickshaws, the Chandigarh Administration issued a press release on Friday stating that only LPG-run autos would be allowed to operate in the city from September 1.

“The owners of diesel-run autos can either convert to LPG or go in for new LPG-run three-wheelers. Those desirous of purchasing the LPG kit or a new LPG-run auto can avail of a loan from the Delhi Financial Corporation at concessional rates of interest. No collateral security will be required.

“While conversion to LPG will cost between Rs 6,000 and Rs 8,000,a new LPG-run auto costs Rs 1.25 lakh. Those who wish to avail of the facility can contact the STA office”,stated Secretary,State Transport Authority,Vandana Disodia.

On the issue of availability of LPG for autorickshaw operators,Disodia said two LPG pumps are already functional in Sector 22 and 34 and three more are in the process of being set up. “While one of these will start operation next month, the remaining two should be ready by August 31,2009,” she added.

Further, the Chandigarh Administration plans to introduce a “uniform corridor policy” under which 500 LPG autos each from Punjab and Haryana would be allowed to ply in Chandigarh and an equal number of autos will ply from Chandigarh to Mohali and Panchkula.

While an agreement to this effect has already been signed with Punjab,an accord with the Haryana Government is in the offing.
