A former student of a Chandigarh college sustained serious injuries while his friend had a providential escape when a group of college students attacked them with swords and other deadly weapons, besides firing shots in a busy Phase VII market here on Tuesday evening. Jatinder Pal Singh alias Nikki,20,of Sector 69,Mohali,was admitted in critical condition at Mohali Civil Hospital while his friend Maninder Pal Singh,21,of Phase VII here, escaped unhurt.
Amarjit Gill, president of Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) in GGDSD College,Sector 32,Chandigarh,was accused of leading a group of five other students to attack the victims, who owe allegiance to their rival students faction Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU),DSP (City-I) Raka Ghirra told Newsline. The brazen use of deadly weapons and firing created panic in the market even as all the six assailants managed to flee the spot.
It was at around 7.30 pm that on the call of Gill, who was earlier his good friend,Nikki, along with Maninder went to the market to meet him. No sooner Nikki came out of the car,Gill and his accomplices pounced on him and attacked him, leaving him badly injured,DSP said while quoting Maninders statement to the police.
A police party, which was stationed nearby on a routine checking duty, rushed the spot on hearing gunfire shots but till then the assailants fled away in a Maruti Gypsy. Preliminary police investigations revealed that Nikki had split with Gill sometime back and was presently supporting his rival SOPU leaders, following which Gill was nursing grudge against him and planned the attack. Nikki was scheduled to go abroad for higher studies shortly, the DSP said.
Raka said the police will register a case under relevant law provisions on receipt of medico-legal report, which was still awaited till filing of this report.
