CN & heard: Female cops face eve-teasing

UT Traffic police has recently added some fresh recruits to its fleet comprising both male and females.

UT Traffic police has recently added some fresh recruits to its fleet comprising both male and females. But the young female traffic cops are a harassed lot and not too happy being positioned at the busy traffic signals especially in the areas around Sector 9,10,11 and 35,courtesy eve teasers. In fact a section of the fresh female recruits had even complained to the IG that youngsters in order to strike a conversation ask them for directions and when they start replying, these youngsters start asking them their phone numbers and other details and sometimes even misbehave with them. It seems even female cops need protection while on duty.

What’s the catch?

While officials of the UT Education Department have been trying to cover up for the delay in initiating the child mapping survey for the last academic year by saying that the process of updating data is yet to determined, the real cause seems to be different. According to sources, the department has long been struggling to convince teachers (surveyors) who are highly reluctant to visit the colonies and households in periphery. The teachers fear misbehaviour as well as difficulty in taking down details of the slumdwellers, who ask several questions before answering the surveyors.

In defence

The training session in self defence organised by the police at Panjab University witnessed a few lighter moments as the demonstrators got into the flow. Two students were called by the trainers for a demonstration. ‘Protecting’ herself one of the students slapped the other a little too hard. Demonstration of another technique to save oneself from a knife saw the weapon flying into the audience. The saving grace was that the ‘weapon’ was a spoon.

Encore

There is rarely a function of the Municipal Corporation that passes off peacefully without a dispute. Be it councillors involved in a tussle about their names on invitation cards there are reasons galore for tussles. This time, however the event to pay homage to martyrs was disturbed due to a different reason. One of the war widows who was to be honoured left the function angered at her name not being announced. This made a councillor comment that like Indian weddings are never complete till a relative gets angry, the same is the case with functions organised by the Municipal Corporation.

Stung

When the enemy is human, there is every chance of that person being caught. But the same cannot be said when the enemy is tiny like a bee. That is what some Punjab Police personnel had to face near Chandigarh Police Headquarters in Sector 9,an army of bees. Even Punjab Police commandos, who were trained to tackle every possible danger, laid their arms, and had to run for their lives on spotting these deadly enemies. Such was the situation, that an observer remarked that ‘saving oneself from bees’ exercise should be held for all police personnel.
