MC and Rajnikanth

Following the ruckus in the Municipal Corporation over the rail bribery scam, complaints have been given to the police against former Congress councillors for throwing bottles of water at the protesting councillors from the visitor’s gallery. Social network sites that are abuzz with jokes about actor Rajnikanth, have added another one to the list: “One bottle hitting six people,it must have been thrown by Rajnikanth.”

Unexpected

In an unexpected move, counsel for Ram Kumar Chaudhary, accused of murdering Jyoti Kumari, girl from Hoshiarpur, requested the High Court to advance the date of hearing, than adjourning it for a long date. With summer vacations on,a long date would have rather benefited Chaudhary. However,Chaudhary’s counsel requested that it be heard early. Accepting the request, the Court has fixed the case for hearing in mid June, before the vacation Bench. The petition has been filed by the deceased Jyoti’s father Buti Ram.

Unfair comparison

Perturbed by the comparison of government and private schools students performance in Class X examination that appeared in news reports, one of the UT education department officials said,“Mainu te samaj nai lagdi a comparison kive hogea. Private schoolan ch ammir bache pardhe ne te sade government schoolan ch garib”. (The comparison is unfair. Private schools have rich students while government schools have poor students).

Sunday polls

The polling day for the Panchkula municipal polls coincided with a Sunday. This ensured that the employed people in the city had also turned up to cast the votes. From government employees to the people working in private sector, every one was enthusiastic to cast the vote. People had lined up outside the polling stations in large numbers to exercise their democratic right. Some voters did not expect major changes in the sector, while others had a long wishlist. But whether the elected candidates will fulfil their electoral promises only time will tell. However residents expect that their problems will get immediate redressal once elected members assume office.

Political Stunt

Senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan recently announced his decision to pick up the broom to clean the Grain Market in Sector 26,where sanitation is in a pitiable state. However, apart from holding the broom for a photo op with Dhawan dressed all in white there was little that was done by the group led by him. The condition of the market remains as before. With the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, this seems just the start to political stunts by leaders.

Cong proposes,Patil disposes

The visit of Congress president B B Bahl to UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil with several demands of the city residents raised eyebrows in the city unit of the party with Bahl not having done this earlier. The meeting, meanwhile, did not go as smoothly as the Congress president would have wished for with Patil rejecting several demands that were raised. These included allotment of land for religious structures as well as changing leasehold property in Industrial Area into freehold property. The Congress, that has a history of tussles with the former Administrator, seems to be struggling to find favour with the present one as well.
