The Indian Express Blood Donors Club has been organising blood donation camps since 1991. The 23rd camp organised by the club was held at The Indian Express office in Sector 6,Panchkula,on December 22. During each camp close to 80 units of blood are collected. This year State Bank of India,Talwar Dairy and Sundarams were the sponsors of the camp. A team of doctors and other staff from Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32 ,collected the blood units. T K Berry,Assistant General Manager,local head office,State Bank of India,while inaugurating the camp also donated blood.

In his blood

It was a birthday with a difference for the president of the city unit of the Rashtriya Janata Dal Ravinder Krishan. The leader,who is also a leading tax lawyer,has been celebrating his birthday by organising blood donation camps at his residence. While last year around 300 units of blood were collected,the blood donation camp at his birthday last week witnessed a further increase. Bravo!

Not a child’s play

Making a mockery of the Right to Education Act,the dispute over its implementation has turned into a tiff between the UT Administration and private schools. While the UT Administration is ensuring that the draft rules framed by it,in accordance with the rules of the Central Act are notified,the schools are leaving no stone unturned to delay the process. Also,in order to save their skin,both are blaming each other for the delay. What both parties fail to comprehend is that it is the students who are at the receiving end.

Not fair

Haryana may be one of the most progressive states of the country,but the state government does not expect women living in the state to own any vehicle in their own name,be it a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler. Apply for the registration of a vehicle in your name,and you are given a ‘Registration Paper’ by the Registration Office at Panchkula. The space for name only has ‘Shri …’ and for further identification,‘Son of Shri…’. There is no space for a Miss or Mrs,or daughter/wife of… Women have no option but to cut out the Shri and write ‘Kumari…. or Shrimati….’ as the case may be.

Wooing the leader

With the Mayoral elections round the corner,prospective candidates are making rounds of the residence of Union Minister Pawan Bansal to stake their claim. More than one prospective candidates are these days seen telling anyone who cares to listen,“Bansalji has made up his mind. I am the number one choice this time.” This has everyone speculating which one of the numero uno candidates would finally make it to the top.

On demand

After drawing flak to install an iron bridge over the water body at the Student Centre,the Panjab University authorities are now facing criticism for their new proposal of replacing it with a sitting area for students. On questioning the relevance of the bridge that was recently constructed,the Vice-Chancellor justified that the bridge was constructed with scrap and least money was spent on it. He says extra sitting area is the demand from the students,who do not find any place to sit especially during the peak hours.

Theft of material such as railing and benches from green belts in various sectors is a frequent issue of discussion in the House Meeting of the Municipal Corporation. In a recent meeting,it was pointed out how in a green belt created in Manimajra even ducks kept in the pond stolen. At another newly created green belt,the ‘tusks’ of an elephant installed were broken by mischief mongers.
