The ever-stinking dysfunctional garbage processing plant at Dadumajra recently won an award for for the best solid waste management plant in the country.

This award ‘sinks’
The ever-stinking dysfunctional garbage processing plant at Dadumajra recently won an award for for the best solid waste management plant in the country. The little known award came as a surprise even to the Municipal Corporation for which the plant has become a big embarrassment. Regarding the honour,we do not yet know what were the yardsticks for determining it,but it surely doesn’t say much about the existing waste management plants in India — at least those that were considered for the award.

Concessions within
Last year, the Haryana government re-introduced the Leave Travel Concession (LTC) for its employees. As per the norms the employees were entitled to one month’s salary along with the leave. There was no requirement for submission of any bills. Employees subscribed to this incentive in such large numbers forcing the government to do a rethink about the sop. As per a latest order, all the departments have been asked to fix a definite sum in a financial year for the LTC and then allow the leave first only to those employees who are going to retire in a year.
Only if some money is left after these employees have availed of their dues, the others would be allowed to avail it in the same financial year.

Punjabi culture,agriculture
The press statement before the launch of the first edition of Pashudhan Gyan Vigyan,a magazine launched for region’s agriculturists and livestock owners, made an interesting read. The statement issued by the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Dr Harbans Singh Dhalla read: “This is the first literature for livestock farmers in Punjabi language along with the photographs of prized animals of north India with Punjabi culture.”
Whoever said that the only culture of the region is agriculture couldn’t be more wrong, when even animals have a culture here.

‘Ghar di sharaab hove’
Punjab’s Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla, other day, rightly cricitised the Punjabi folk singers for their songs depicting punjabi culture. During a public function, she said,“While on one hand,we are trying to save Punjab’s youth from the drug addiction,on the other hand,we are singing songs —- Ghar di sharaab hove (A home made liquor). What message are we sending to the state’s youths?”

When will these teachers teach?
The Chandigarh Administration’s Education Department, which initiated the process of recruiting teachers for city schools way back in 2007,is still to finish the recruitment. Initially caught up in legal tangle, the process hit the headlines for erroneous merit lists and wrong selections of teachers done by the Education Department. While the matter has reached the court once again, the final result in the Social Studies subject is yet to be declared.

Cover me,please
With reality shows focusing on children, parents do not want to leave any stone unturned to provide the proverbial 15 minutes of fame to their cherubs. Other day a newspaper received an invite sent by one such overzealous parent,of course on behalf of his little daughter,to cover her birthday party. The little girl invited the photojournalists as well to “provide vast coverage” for her day.
