On a swing

The Municipal Corporation (MC) seems to have taken a fancy for colourful swings. While parks in the northern sectors have got their share of swings at the onset of the current financial year, their poor cousins in the southern side of the city — sectors 52,55,61 — are now getting these fancy swings, when the sanctioned budget has to be exhausted by the area councillor. The delay may be a result of the lackadaisical attitude of the councillor or the executing authorities at the MC. Nevertheless, the children residing in these sectors could not have been more thankful to the MC for this delayed gift. They can now be seen making a beeline for swings till late in the evening.

When the bell rings…

Such is the terror of new Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi — who has conducted several surprise checks in various offices — that the moment his office bell rings, each staff member of his court rushes towards his chamber. Last week, while the judges were having lunch together, his court staff was sitting casually. Suddenly Gogoi’s office bell rang. Taken by surprise, while those having lunch packed their tiffins, the staff from other courts ran outside and the chief’s court staff ran to his chamber to take orders. Much to their surprise,an electrician came outside to say smilingly “ghabrao mat, main tha (do not worry,it was me)”. The electrician had come to rectify the bell.

Fake publicity

How local-level political leaders vie for cheap publicity is not a new thing, but recently, one such publicity-hungry leader in Mohali was exposed for gaining fake publicity. A day after a local Akali leader issued a press release and photographs of providing a tricycle to a handicapped person from his own pocket, the deputy commissioner had to clarify that the tricycle was funded by the District Red Cross Society and not any individual.

Cops turn cricket buffs

With the recent two matches of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 at PCA Stadium in Mohali failing to attract much spectators, the police not only outnumbered the spectators but also turned into cricket buffs by filling up most of the empty stands. “With no crowds in sight, there is nothing else to do except turning spectators,” reasoned a police officer, watching the match throughout the day.
