Self praise is no praise

Haryana Police Chief Ranjiv Dalal’s telephone caller tune is a paean for the Haryana Police that waxes eloquent about the qualities of Haryana cops and lyrically claims that the Haryana cop’s main purpose in life is to serve the common man. The fact that Dalal rarely picks up his phone, ensures that those who call him end up listening to the full version of this song in praise of Haryana cops. The song has started to sound all the more embarrassing ever since the Special Task Force (STF),which was created by him,has been exposed to be involved in extortion and other illegal activities. State’s police service has never been known for its people-friendly approach. Instances in the last few years, including the notorious Savita case and the episode in Yamunangar, where the police refused to register the complaint of a Dalit rape victim have further eroded people’s trust in the state police. If the DGP wants to convince the common man, that state’s police is out to help him,he needs to ensure that show excellence in their duty and sensitivity to the public. There won’t be any need to compose poetic self tributes.

Wrong number

Talking about phones,UT Home Secretary,Ram Niwas has issued a stringent written order to all departmental heads that no one of them should avoid talking to media. Officers in the administration have told that the circular stated that if a scribe called for a comment or an inquiry pertaining to a story, the departmental head should give the quote. Shortly after this circular was issued, this newspaper exposed the teacher recruitment scandal. In the follow up to those stories,we have been regularly trying to call the Home Secretary but the phone has remained on the voice mail mode (from morning to late evening) for days altogether now.

Reverse swing

The PCA stadium in Mohali hasn’t been very kind to quick bowler Shantakumaran Sreesanth. During IPL 2008,he was slapped by national team mate Harbhajan Singh. Last year, just before the match against Australia,he was diagnosed with swine flu and had to be admitted in Fortis Hospital. This time,he was certain to reverse the trend. “No dancing,no slapping,no illnesses. Only good bowling this time,” said the pacer from Kerala in an interaction with the media.

Refill time

The literal and the metaphorical stink raised by the new lake in Sector 42 is causing considerable embarrassment to the administration. It has finally woken up to its folly of filling the lake with potable water, which too would immediately seep down the surface. Sources reveal, that to make amends, that administration has now proposed to fill the lake with tertiary treated water. This is the cleaned form of sewage water which is often used for irrigation purposes. While this idea appears certainly more acceptable than foolishly filling lake with potable water, one only worries that the cost of the project of procuring and treating this water isn’t prohibitive. The earlier record of administration is such project is bound to make everyone suspicious.

Wrong side

Haryana’s feisty MLA Kiran Choudhary has never made any bones when it comes to expressing her dislike for Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. However,Ms Choudhary is most peeved when she comes across Geeta Bhukkal, her fellow Congress MP,who holds the education portfolio in the current government. In the recent session,Choudhary asked several questions to Bhukkal. Realising that she was not very comfortable in English,Choudhary chose to speak and argue in chaste English. To her credit,Bhukkal replied remarkably well. The whole drama and Choudhary’s subsequent antagonism towards the government made BJP Anil Vij to quip,“Madam you should come and join our side. You appear to be on the wrong side.”

Malapropism

Another legislator in the Haryana state assembly chose to highlight the problem of abysmal sex ratio in the state. But INLD MLA from Kalayat Rampal Majra had a rather poor choice of words as he repeatedly kept on describing the poor “sexual rate” in Haryana. When he eventually stated,“Despite a lot of efforts the sexual rate in Haryana is declining…” the women legislators in the house stood up and asked him to correct his language.
