CM to invite PM to inaugurate Bathinda refinery

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said they were committed to make the state a leading industrial power of the country.

The political conference organised by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to celebrate Baisakhi at Damdama Sahib in Talwandi Sabo was marked by talk of development and digs at ongoing infighting in the opposition Congress. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said they were committed to make the state a leading industrial power of the country. “Malwa will be the next textile hub and Amritsar and Ajitgarh IT destinations of the world,” he said. He put the likely investment of textile industries in the Malwa belt to Rs 60,000 crore in two years.

Stating that the new industrial focus of the Punjab government was aimed at reducing red tape, making single window functional and make the state investment friendly,Badal said a complete overhaul of industry department was in the offing and the state will create a land bank for investors, which will be provided off the shelf.

Taking credit for setting up Bathinda refinery,he said it has started supplying kerosene, petrol and other by-products to various parts of the country besides exporting its products. “I along with Chief Minister would soon meet Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh requesting him to formally dedicate this prestigious project to the country,” he added.

He added that the inauguration of Integrated Check Post today would change the economic profile of whole state. “We would also request Union Home Minister P Chidambram to take early steps for opening Fazilka and Ferozepur Borders for trade with Pakistan so that these border cities could regain their lost stature,” he added.

‘Capt protest politcal drama’

Later while speaking to reporters,he mocked the protest staged by Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh against alleged framing up of Congress workers in Rampura Phull. “The SAD-BJP government does not believe in vendetta politics. He said a criminal case was filed on the directions of Election Commission of India regarding election related violence in the month of January and that worker was evading arrest. He said the police has just followed the directions of ECI and state government has no role in it,” he said while adding that the Congress was too busy in infighting and poses no fight to SAD.

Later,SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema described Amarinder’s protest as a political drama aimed at getting sympathy “by becoming a martyr in the eyes of Congress workers” and save his chair.

“The district and sessions judge,Bathinda, has already rejected the anticipatory bail pleas of the accused. Given the facts of the case, how can Amarinder claim that it is a case of political vendetta,” Cheema said.
